Facilitators will offer insights on how and why social class can shape one’s leadership style, generate reaction to others’ styles, and permeate leadership education. Participants will be invited to interrogate particular leadership norms in higher education that can create a cultural mismatch for students from poor and working-classes. This session will give participants a glimpse of how these culturally symbolic positions may hinder or advance gender equity and gender representation at HBCUs. Participants will engage in meaningful discussion on reimagining these gendered roles through an equity-focused lens and considerations for gender equity and representation within student leadership. Primary Contact: Sally Watkins, [email protected] Tuesday, March 8 8:00AM-9:00AM ACC 274 CSI Endorsed Program “Everything I Did Was Black": Examining Critical Student Leader Development This presenter will share the Care Based Process of Student Leader Development that emerged from a research study using Critical Race Theory's notions of marginality, power, and forms of resistance to exam how students with historically marginalized identities are developed through their experiences serving on the executive board of departmentally advised student organizations. The presenter will share implications this study’s findings have for engaging students with historically-marginalized identities.
